Get a good grade for government grants - its an issue that has the Marathi art fraternity divided. Girish Joshi, who staged his popular play Final Draft in Nagpur feels that grants are totally unnecessary. He says, I am personally against the idea of government grants because I feel that if your play is not able to generate revenue then stop the play, why ask the government to pay? When an audience rejects a play, theres something not right commercially about the play, so either set that right or dont do commercial plays.
Stick to non-profit shows!
So ask Girish if the financial fortunes of the Marathi theatre industry will change like that of the film industry and he says, Marathi theatre is alive and its doing well. Our audience is very diverse and this is where the huge difference in the paying capacity of the audience comes into play! That said, those who want to do plays do them not for money but for passion and similarly those who see Marathi plays see them for the love of it. Money will remain an issue I think.
