The upcoming film 'Disco Sannya
', which revolves around a slum kid entering the life of a millionaire, was awarded a U/A certificate by the board, but according to the makers, the film couldve easily gotten a U certificate.
There is neither objectionable language in the film nor any violence, says producer Sachin Purohit adding, In fact we have subtly dealt with a lot of social issues through the story. There is even a song about humanity at the end of the film. So, I dont understand why a U/A certificate was given to us.
The first-time producer informs that the screening committee had a problem with a particular scene wherein the protagonist, a kid, blackmails a man. I cant reveal the exact details about that scene because it is essential to the plot of the film, but yes, the board had a problem with that, says Purohit.
Not long ago, another Marathi film, 'Wagherya', had faced similar problems and director Sameer Asha Patil had expressed his angst on social media. Though the films producers decided not to get into a fight and accepted the certification, Sameer feels it was not right on the CBFCs part to give 'Wagherya' a parental guidance tag. He says, Certain words in Marathi dont have replacement options. Also, these are commonly used in particular dialects so there is nothing objectionable in them. Wagherya had references to a persons derrire and the board did not approve to the usage of the word in Marathi. There was also a smooch scene, which we were ready to do away with, but ultimately we decided to go with the certification that the censor board suggested.
The recently released 'Half Ticket' too has a U/A certificate and producer Nanu Jaisinghani was surprised about the same. We were given the U/A certification because of smoking scenes and because the kids were shown stealing coal. I was surprised though that the trailer also got a U/A certification, says Jaisinghani.
In the past, there have been films with ample cuss words, getting a U certificate. Calling out the double standards of the CBFC, Purohit says, Films with bloodshed and cuss words have been passed with a U certification in the past but when it comes to small or first-time producers, the CBFC speaks the language of following guidelines.
How a U/A certificate affects the film?Producer Poonam Shende whose film Swami Public Ltd had also faced similar issues, says, A U/A certificate affects the sale of satellite rights and songs. Compared to Hindi films, theres hardly anything objectionable in Marathi films, but the boards terms and conditions are different for every film.
