Zapuk Zupuk

Zapuk Zupuk is a blend of three unfulfilled stories held together by social media catchphrases and references. Suraj (Suraj Chavan) plays a slightly slow man-child who has regular flights of fantasy with his imaginary superhero friend – Surajveer. He falls for Narayani (Jui Bhagwat) and his actions lead to her falling for her childhood crush (Indraniel Kamat). This leads to misadventures and an ultimate clash with her suitor (Hemant Pharande).

The story takes heavy inspiration from Koi... Mil Gaya, Sairat and Raanjhanaa. The production quality, which is evident in the indulgent VFX and fight sequences that are possibly the best in any recent Marathi film, are praiseworthy. Where the film falters is in the less-than-impressive story. Riding on his social media fame, Suraj Chavan blurs the line between his real and reel character, and that works in his favour. Bhagwat and Kamat do justice to their characters.

The directional skill of Kedar Shinde guides Zapuk Zupuk well. However, the cramming of multiple plot points leads to a lack of proper resolution for any of the characters’ stories, leaving one feeling unfulfilled.

Praiseworthy cinematography, editing and music apart, Zapuk Zupuk ends up being a collection of catchy dialogues and catchphrases with a predictable story. Watch this one if you are curious about seeing what Suraj Chavan brings to the role.
