Satyashodhak

A refreshing and meaningful biography that does justice to the greatness of the figure it aims to capture, Satyashodhak opens with the well known incidents from Mahatma Phule’s life, covering the first 20 mins. It then goes on to expand upon the acts of the social reformer, and his unending struggle to stand up against exploitation.

Mahatma Phule is a well-known name in Indian history but filmmaker Nilesh Jalamkar shines some well-deserved light on the reformer's accomplishments that history books may have left off. His opposition to the caste system, work toward education of backward classes, orphan care and religious reforms are portrayed through an inspirational narrative. The cost of standing against the norms and the bravery of the members of the Satyashodhak Samaj leaves one with goosebumps.

Sandeep Kulkarni and Rajshri Deshpande essay the role of Jyotiba and Savitribai with panache. Their onscreen presence is matched by Suresh Vishwakarma, portraying the brave Lahuji Salve. The dramatic entrances and highpoints are backed by some good music and sound design. The set production and art brings out the tone of the era that the film is set in. Care is given to small details and that adds to the impact.

Satyashodhak is an ideal historical biopic that takes you on a tour through time and showcases the greatness of a righteous man who was instrumental in changing our society.
