Kanni

Review: A well-told story, Kanni marks the journey of a young girl named Kalyani (Hruta Durgule), who is desperately trying to find a British citizen to marry. Altruism aside, this is so that she can continue living away from her village. This dream is shattered after all her job prospects fall through.

The film is jam-packed with brilliant dialogues from the get go and keeps the audience hooked throughout. The nuanced and well-scripted characters are relatable enough that one wants to be a part of their daily banter. Soumya (Shubhankar Tawde), Nisha (Vallari Viraj) and Bhushan (Rishi Manohar) are an ideal friend group. Nihal (Ajinkya Raut), the Indian-British citizen who Kalyani is set to marry, essays his role adequately. However, his acting takes a notable dip in certain scenes. Walking a tight rope between doing what she wants versus what is expected of her by her family, Kalyani's emotional journey is in perfect symphony with the background score and Hruta delivers on the acting front well.

Director-writer Sameer Hemant Joshi tactfully delivers on the show-don't-tell method of storytelling. But the film suffers from small errors, like that of Kalyani's watch recording her heartbeat even when it's not on her hand. These leave a bad taste in one's mouth. That said, the film keeps pulling you back in after the low points in the narrative.

Although the film's ending is fairly predictable, it does put a smile on your face, making this a great film to watch with your family. Expect laughter, drama, romance, some tears and a whole lot of fun too.
