A dark-skin slur in Kay Re Rascalla?
Priyanka Chopra has been making quite a lot of waves in Hollywood as well as back home. Her production company
While 'Ventilator' was a tear-jerker based on father and son relationship, the second Marathi venture by her production house is going to be a comedy. All set to release this week, '
Given Priyanka’s own struggle with dark skin, it therefore comes as a shock that 'Kay Re Rascalla' has a scene where two characters speak against a dark-skinned character. In the trailer, we can see Vaiju’s mother ecstatic about marrying off her daughter to another boy Mutthu. To which Vaiju’s father says, “But Mutthu’s so dark and our Vaiju is so fair. If they marry each other their child will resemble a zebra.”
In her interview with The Guardian, Priyanka had said that being called “Kaali” in her childhood had deeply impacted her psyche “It really works on your psyche, man. We don’t realise it, but it does. I was the darkest, so in jest my family called me kaali, and I never really understood how much that affected me until I was a teenager.”
Yet, her production house is endorsing a scene with such nasty slur. We wonder if Priyanka has watched the film, before it releases this week.
