‘We should not abandon a friend’: Joy Mathew supports Ranjith, sparks debate in film industry

The recent arrest of filmmaker Ranjith over sexual harassment allegations has triggered strong reactions across the Malayalam film fraternity. The accusations were made by an actress associated with one of his projects, leading to immediate legal action. Actor Parvathy Thiruvothu weighed in on the matter, stating that the development did not come as a surprise to her and hinted that such behaviour had allegedly occurred more than once.

Amid the growing discourse, writer-director-actor Joy Mathew has voiced his support for Ranjith, stressing that the complete truth is yet to emerge. According to Cinema Express, speaking to the media, he highlighted what he believes are gaps in the legal system, particularly the swift arrest of the accused immediately after a complaint is filed.

“The court does not grant us enough time to listen to the accused's version of events,” he said, underlining his concern about due process. Drawing a comparison, he referred to a past case involving his director friend PT Kunju Muhammad, where action followed much later despite serious allegations being raised with Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan.

Mathew also suggested that the prompt action in Ranjith’s case might be influenced by political considerations. “This has not been the case in Ranjith's issue. Immediate action has been taken here. It could be to save the face of the ruling government, which is about to fall,” he claimed. He further criticised the authorities, alleging that such decisions reflect a pattern of harsh measures, even against those who once supported the establishment.

Emphasising his personal connection, Mathew described Ranjith as more than just a colleague. “We should not abandon a friend just because they commit a mistake. Parents do not discard some of their children when they go down the wrong path but rather hold them close,” he remarked. He added, “Even if he has committed a mistake, I am willing to forgive him and hold him close, unlike those who say that they are with the survivor. Let the court prove whether they have survived the alleged incident.”




The actor-filmmaker concluded by contrasting this situation with his stance in the case involving actor Dileep. He explained that his response differed because Dileep is merely an industry peer, not a close friend. “There is a difference between a colleague and a friend,” he signed off, reiterating that personal relationships influence how one reacts in difficult times.
