Vinayak Sasikumar: This is how the songs of Kumbalangi Nights and June were born

and his youthful wordings have often garnered attention among the many veteran writers of Malayalam music industry.

His latest songs, for the films '

Kumbalangi Nights

' and '

June

' have been noted for how well they reflect some warm thoughts centered around the characters.

Apparently, the song in 'Kumbalangi Nights,' 'Ezhutha Kadha,' was put together in 24 hours! “Anwar Ali was to write all the songs in the film. The song I wrote wasn’t a planned one. I remember that on January 8 night, Sushin called me saying that there is the requirement of a new song. ‘However, we need it quickly. You will have to come tomorrow to Kochi and write it for us,’ he said, while I was in Kozhikode,” remembers Vinayak. The next day, he apparently took a train to Kochi and while travelling, finished writing the song! “When I reached, Sushin, Shyam Pushkaran and director Madhu were there, and they changed just about one line of the song. In 24 hours time, it was done,” Vinayak recalls.

Similarly, the five songs he wrote for 'June' also have their own special stories of birth. “The film’s director Ahammed Khabeer loved the song ''Thaniye' from the film Guppy, which I had written. This is what urged him to rope me in for this project,” Vinayak reveals. And just like in the case of 'Ezhutha Kadha', 'June’s' popular song 'Minni Minni' was also born in the last moment. “All the other important songs and the romantic track were done, post which the requirement for this one came up. The film’s heroine Rajisha was also there while I was penning it,” Vinayak says. The actress could give him some inputs from the female perspective and the song was the first one to be released, from June’s album. “People lapped it up quickly and it gave the film some good mileage too,” Vinayak observes.
