Ann Augustine (Artist)


The film Artist was directed by Shyamaprasad and was released in the year 2013. It was reportedly the adaptation of Dreams in Prussian Blue, a novel written by Paritosh Uttam. Ann Augustine was paired opposite Fahadh Faasil. The movie talks about the journey of two arts students, who takes a decision of living together. Ann Augustine played the character of Gayathri, a Brahmin girl. The movie shows how, after her husband loses his eyesight, she goes through various struggles to fulfil their dreams. Through Gayathri, Ann played an ambitious, bold and independent character. Ann Augustine won the Kerala State Film Awards for Best Actress.

Manju Warrier (How Old Are You)


Rosshan Andrrews' How Old Are You? marked the grand comeback of 90s reigning actress Manju Warrier after 15 years. Manju Warrier played the character of Nirupama Rajeev, a clerk in Revenue Department. The movie focused on a woman discovering her identity and importance after a certain point of time. It even showed that there's no barricades or a certain age for a woman to fulfil her dreams and she can achieve it whenever she looks up to it. This movie definitely broke the stereotype. For this inspirational comeback, Manju Warrier won the 62nd Filmfare Awards South for Best Actor (Female) category.

Rima Kallingal (22 Female Kottayam)


22 Female Kottayam was one of the best performances of Rima Kallingal and was directed by her then husband Aashiq Abu. The movie was released in the year 2012. This suspense thriller fetched Rima Kallingal the Kerala State Film Award for Best Actress. The movie gives the glimpse of life of Tessa, a nurse in the city of Bangalore. This movie highlights the agonies of her love life, ambitions and the dangerous situations she lands into. The movie was a box-office hit and both the leads, Rima and Fahadh, were applauded for their performances.

Shobana (Thira)


The movie Thira explores the theme of human-trafficking. Shobana plays the character of Dr. Rohini Pranab, a cardiologist and a human rights activist. Her character is of a strong woman, who, with the help of youngsters including the debutant Dhyaan Sreenivasan, finds children who are victim of human trafficking and successfully saves them. Shobana, after a very long time, gave a very strong performance and won appreciation for it. The movie was directed by Vineeth Sreenivasan and was released in the year 2013.

Swetha Menon (Kalimannu)


Blessy directed Kalimannu was one-of-its-kind movie in the history of Malayalam cinema. It shows the story of a bar dancer, who aspires to become a film-star and eventually becomes one. After her husband becomes brain dead due to a fatal accident, she fights for the birth of a child by artificial insemination. She successfully gives birth to her husband's baby by this process. During the filming of the movie, Swetha was actually pregnant and the delivery of her baby was actually filmed as part of the movie's shoot. This happened for the first time, where an actual childbirth footage was used in the film. This sequence created quite a stir in the industry and led to a big controversy.

Swetha Menon (Paleri Manikyam)


Swetha's other path-breaking performance was in the film Paleri Manikyam: Oru Pathirakolapathakathinte Katha released in the year 2009 and directed by Ranjith. For this film, Shweta Menon won her first Kerala State Film Award for Best Actress. Swetha played the character of Cheeru, a very bold and beautiful female who cheats on her husband and also supports his murder. The movie revolves around the rape of her daughter-in-law and how she remains silent about it. Her character was very challenging and her performance marvellous.
