Ennu Ninte Moideen

The movie is a real life story portraying love, hope, despair and tragedy in the life of two characters from orthodox families Moideen a Muslim boy and Kanchanamala a Hindu girl. The powerful story is a far cry from the modern day love stories. Though not full on entertainment or masala movie the movie raises politically relevant questions and creates the 60s realistically. A commercial success at the box office the director nearly spent seven years on research for working on this film. In the end, the move paid off as the audience loved their soul-wrenching love story.

Celluloid

This Kamal directed flick is a befitting tribute to a man whose contributions in Malayalam Cinema went unnoticed in history. The director puts an honest attempt to give an artist who led his life in obscurity his rightful due. The movie shows the life of J.C Daniel who despite creating Malayalam cinema’s first ever motion picture was overlooked purely because of his inability to color his lenses. The biopic also says a bit or two about Mollywood’s first heroine Rosy. The movie emerged a winner at box office sweeping a number of awards including the best film, best actor and best music.

Paleri Manikyam: Oru Pathirakolapathakathinte Katha

The movie depicts the story of a Thiyya girl Manikyam, in the village of Paleri whose death is registered as the first ever case of sexual harassment in the state of Kerala. The film unravels the mystery behind the murder that took place more than half a century ago. An adaptation of T.P Rajeevan’s novel of the same title, the movie is near perfect with minor ignorable blemishes. A recipient of numerous awards the film follows a complex narrative but every loose end is perfectly tied up in the end. On the whole the directors first take on the first recorded murder case is rich in visuals as well as in content.

Thalappavu

Malayalam movie fans are always intrigued by the stories of Naxalism and the period of growth of communlaism in Kerala. ‘Thalappavu’ is one such movie which is based on the life of revolutionary Arikkad Varghese and constable P. Ramachandran Nair. The latter was forced to kill Varghese in a staged encounter but the constable however could not live with the guilt. This real life story of the popular naxalite had intelligently crafted dialogue lines by Babu Janardhanan. Although the movie did not garner much success at the box office but garnered acclaims and awards.

Crime File

The movie is based on the 1992 Sister ‘Abhaya Murder Case’termed as one of the most sensational cases solved in Kerala state. The plot of the movie revolves around the murder of sister Amala who was found dead in the well adjoining her convent. The investigative thriller which was scripted by A.K Sajan and helmed by K Madhu was a superhit at the box office thanks to the powerful content and suspense. With Suresh Gopi in the lead role, the movie has some strong scenes and punching dialogues which is why the movie is rated as one of the cult classics in Malayalam cinema.
