When Thilakan praised Dulquer Salmaan, said “He’s a promising actor”

Mollywood’s legendary actor Thilakan, renowned for his remarkable performances, earlier praised Dulquer Salmaan as a “promising actor” before his passing.

Years back, in an insightful conversation with director Kamal, Thilakan highlighted Dulquer Salmaan’s talent and potential, particularly noting their memorable collaboration in the film Ustad Hotel.


Thilakan played the role of Kareem, a revered grandfather, alongside Dulquer Salmaan, who portrayed Faizi, an aspiring chef. Their on-screen chemistry was celebrated for its depth and authenticity, contributing significantly to the film’s success.

Reflecting on Dulquer Salmaan’s performance, Thilakan remarked, “The main lead in the movie was Dulquer Salmaan. Considering his age, we cannot call him a big actor, but his inexperience, I feel, is a big plus point for him.”

Thilakan elaborated on Dulquer Salmaan’s acting prowess, noting, “Dulquer was not simply acting with me; he was behaving in each scene.” He emphasized that genuine behavior in acting is crucial and praised Salmaan for his natural talent. “Behaving is what an actor needs. Dulquer has acquired such a talent and he is surely a promise,” Thilakan added.

Thilakan, known for his keen observational skills, shared that he meticulously observed every detail and performance in films. He also mentioned, “I have also not tried to ‘Act’ in the movie,” reflecting his approach to behavioral acting.

‘Ustad Hotel’, directed by Anjali Menon, features a stellar cast including Nithya Menen, Siddique, Mamukkoya, and Lena in supporting roles, with Asif Ali and Jishnu appearing in cameos. The film tells the story of Faizi, who returns to his hometown to help his grandfather run his hotel after failing to gain his father’s support for his culinary dreams.
