The teaser of
Parvathy starrer Varthamanam was released on social media and it seems to give us a ringside view of the student protests that overtook colleges in Delhi in the wake of the imposition of the citizenship amendment bill. Parvathy plays a Malayali research student who is in the capital city and is thrown into the thick of the protests, led among others by another Malayali student, played by Roshan Mathew.
The story already seems to have struck a chord with viewers with the teaser getting over 3 lakh hits since it was released less than a day back. The film doesn’t look like it is mollycoddling issues with hard hitting dialogues - a nervous, but emotional Parvathy at one rally says, “We are not blind, and we will not let them win” - amidst scenes about “majoritarian violence gripping the country”. The film seems to be shot not just in Delhi, but shows trips to Ladakh and cinematography is by N Alagappan, with BGM by Bijibal. Music is by Pandit Ramesh Narayanan, Hesham Abdul Wahab to lyrics by Rafeeq Ahammed and Vishal Jhonson
Varthamanam, directed by
Sidhartha Siva and written by Aryadan Shaukat, had run into trouble with the regional Censor Board board denying it certification for being “anti-national”. It was later cleared by the Delhi Central Censor Board revising committee, which did not make any cuts but only asked for the muting of a 5 second dialogue. The film is scheduled to release in theatres on February 19.
