Uriyatt tells a contemporary tale through theyyam

Uriyatt

tells the tale of the age-old fight of the lower communities against the upper castes. Based on the lives of rural

theyyam

artistes, the Uriyyat narrative is made through Vishnu, a youngster who has a modern outlook and shuns his family heritage. But when the region and those whom he loves are threatened, however, he feels duty-bound to take on the traditional role to fight those who are out to create trouble. Set over two eras, the

film

tries to showcase contemporary issues through theyyam.

Uriyatt hit the big screen on February 14, under the Play and Picture Creations banner produced by Bharatan Nileshwaram and directed by

K Bhuvananchandran

. The script is by newcomer Ramesh Pullapally. Music is by Kaithapuram Vishwanathan Nambudiri and Sudharshan Payyanur, with lyrics by Ramesh Pullapally and Ajit Sai. Madhu Balakrishnan and Kalesh Karunakaran are the singers. The film is the labour of love of nearly 40 artistes from Nileshwaram and aims to bring international attention to theyyam.

Artistes include Santosh Saras, Ashish Vidyarthi, Sreejith Ravi, Sunil Sukhada, Jayan Cherthala and Kannada actor Manoj Suryanarayan.
