Actor-dancer Tharan Kalyan has reportedly been diagnosed with spasmodic dysphonia, which has caused the temporary loss of her voice. Thara Kalyan’s daughter Sowbhagya Venkitesh recently opened up about her mother’s condition, through their YouTube channel.
Spasmodic dysphonia is a voice disorder, which causes involuntary spasms in the muscles of the voice box or larynx. This causes the voice to break and have a tight, strained, or strangled sound. Spasmodic dysphonia can cause problems ranging from trouble saying a word or two to being unable to talk at all.
Sowbhagya revealed that he mother has been diagnosed with the condition, which has caused her the lose of voice. She also shared that Thara Kalyan underwent surgery recently, and would recover her voice only after three weeks.
Thara Kalyan had also undergone thyroid surgery, two years ago, “At first, it was thought that mom’s loss of voice was due to thyroid goitre. The problem was that the goitre had grown inwards, and we thought that she lost her voice when it hit the soundbox. She has also been teaching children by using her voice for many years,” Sowbhagya Venkitesh said.
She further explained, “Voice loss is also common among teachers who have to work with great strain on their voice. Then too, I thought that was the reason. But it was only later that she was diagnosed with spasmodic dysphonia.”
She added, “One way out of this situation was Botox. My grandmother (Thara’s mother) passed away while mom had undergone that. After the Botox, she needed complete rest, and it was difficult for her to even drink water. But she could not rest at all as it was impossible not to talk to those who came to know about grandma’s death. After exerting more strain and speaking again, this condition returned with greater force than before. And the stress of that time brought the disease back. The only option then was surgery, and mom finally underwent it recently.”
Thara Kalyan is a professional dancer and actor. She is also the daughter of late actress Subbalakshmi.
