‘Freedom Fight’ to ‘Kaalapani’: Movies that depicts individual’s right to freedom

“Life without liberty is like a body without spirit.” Freedom is something that every man irrespective of caste, race or even gender should possess and there have been many international movies such as ‘The Shawshank Redemption’ and ‘The Great Escape’ that depicted the true importance of having freedom in life. Today, as the whole nation is celebrating the 75th Independence day that marks India’s freedom from the torturous British rule, lets take a look into the Malayalam movies that portrayed the importance of having freedom in an individual’s life.

In the classic Malayalam movie ‘Kaalapani’, the story which is set during the 1915 British India, an Indian doctor Govardhan is falsely accused of bombing a train and is sent to a cellular jail in Port Blair. The lead character was played by Mohanlal and the film clearly depicts the struggles of the main character on getting freedom in his life and to meet the love of his life who stays in India. ‘Kaalapani’ was directed by the veteran filmmaker Priyadarshan and had the actors Mohanlal, Tabu, Prabhu and Sreenivasan in major roles

Don’t be fooled by the title of this Jeo Baby’s anthology movie ‘Freedom Fight’, as the film is not at all about the issues faced by Indians during the colonial period. The anthology film has five segments that depict a very realistic story which focuses on the necessity of freedom for different individuals in the society. Different segments in the film were directed by Jeo Baby, Kunjila Mascillamani, Jithin Isaac Thomas, Akhil Anilkumar, and Francis Louis. Actors Joju George, Sidhartha Siva, Rajisha Vijayan, and Srindaa played lead roles in the anthology film.

Just like the name depicts, ‘Swathanthryam Ardharathriyil' aka ‘Freedom at Midnight’ has the main theme related to freedom. Similar to the Hollywood classic movie ‘The Shawshank Redemption’, this Tinu Pappachan’s directorial thriller film tells the story of a group of inmates who try to break out from a prison cell. The film is executed in a very thrilling manner with a couple of twists and turns. Actors Antony Varghese, Lijo Jose Pellissery, Chemban Vinod Jose, and Vinayakan played lead roles in the film.

Adoor Gopalakrishnan’s ‘Mathilukal’ tells the story of a romance between two cell inmates with a wall keeping them apart. Mammootty played the real-life author Vaikom Muhammad Basheer in the movie, who falls in love with his inmate Narayani although he has only heard her voice over the wall in between them. The movie unfortunately speaks against freedom as Vaikom Muhammed Basheer, during the climax sequence, does not want the freedom that he craved for as he misses out the chance to meet Narayani. ‘Mathilukal’ has the famous dialogue that goes by, “Outside is an even bigger jail.”

According to the sources, ‘Thallumaala’ has become the highest opening day grosser in Tovino Thomas’ film career as Khalid Rahman’s commercial entertainer reportedly earned over Rs 3.6 crores on its opening day. These collection figures are yet to be officially announced by the makers.

‘Thallumaala’ is getting wide positive responses from the audience and looking at the collection reports, the film has become a complete winner for this year in Mollywood, and also the film has indeed helped in making Tovino come back to form after a series of underwhelming films after the superhero film ‘Minnal Murali’.

Helmed by Khalid Rahman, ‘Thallumaala’ uses non-linear style storytelling that depends heavily on its Edgar Wright’ style editing pattern. The script of the movie was written by Munsin Parari and apart from Tovino Thomas, ‘Thallumaala’ also has the actors Kalyani Priyadarshan, Lukman, Shine Tom Chacko, and Chemban Vinod Jose in significant roles.
On the other hand, Kunchacko Boban's 'Nna, Thaan Case Kodu' is also getting positive feedbacks from the audience.
