On Wednesday, June 12, morning , a devastating fire broke out in Mangaf, a densely populated area in the Ahmadi Governorate of southern Kuwait, predominantly inhabited by foreign workers. The fire rapidly spread through a six-storeyed building, resulting in the tragic loss of 49 lives, with the majority being Indian nationals. Reports indicate that 42 Indians, including at least five from Kerala, perished in the blaze, while over 50 others were injured.

Malayalam actor Suresh Gopi took to his Facebook handle to express his condolences and condemn the incident. In an emotional note, he stated, “I am deeply moved by the tragic news of the fire in Kuwait that has claimed over 41 lives and left many others injured. My heart goes out to the victims and their families who are enduring unimaginable pain and loss. As someone who values the safety and well-being of every human life, I share in your sorrow and stand in solidarity with all those affected by this disaster. It is in moments like these that we must come together, support one another, and ensure that measures are taken to prevent such tragedies in the future. Let us hold the victims and their loved ones in our thoughts and prayers. May they find the strength to overcome this difficult time, and may the souls of the departed rest in peace.”

The fire broke out at dawn in a building that housed approximately 195 migrant workers. The rapid spread of the blaze caught many residents off guard, making rescue operations challenging for emergency responders. Survivors were quickly evacuated and taken to local hospitals for treatment.

The victims of this tragedy included nationals from several countries, such as Pakistan, the Philippines, Egypt, and Nepal, reflecting the diverse migrant community in Kuwait. The Indian government has expressed deep sorrow over the incident and is working closely with Kuwaiti authorities to assist the affected families.

Initial investigations are focusing on possible lapses in safety measures within the building, which housed a large number of workers in overcrowded conditions.
