In an interesting twist to the burglary episode that took place at Malayali actress Iniya’s residence last week at Trivandrum, the ‘burglar’ turned out to be her sister’s fiancé, Shabin. Shabin had got engaged to Swathy, Iniya’s elder sister, in May. R Sreekumar, Assistant Commissioner, Fort police station, said, “Shabin hails from a financially backward background and was in need of money.
He had approached one Rajan, who was involved in a few petty cases to plan the robbery on the day of the engagement itself. However, their plan did not work out on the same day and he was waiting for the right opportunity."
Shabin was very close to Iniya’s family and had also made duplicate keys to steal the money. He knew that there was money in the house and used to visit Swathy’s place frequently. On Thursday, he went along with the family for a second show movie in a nearby theatre. He had informed Rajan about their outing.
When the family returned home at around 12.30 am after watching the film, they found the front door open and cash missing from the almirah. “Rajan and his accomplices had burgled the house and looted Rs 6 lakh out of which we have recovered Rs 2.5 lakh. We have arrested Shabin and his friend Saju while Rajan and one more culprit are absconding,” said the police.
Swathi is also a serial actress and she and Shabin knew each other earlier.
