Shweta Menon on Mohanlal’s resignation as AMMA President: “It was an even bigger shock than the Hema commission report”

The Malayalam film industry was left in disbelief when superstar Mohanlal stepped down as president of the Association of Malayalam Movie Artists (AMMA).

His resignation came soon after the Hema Commission report was made public. For many, the timing was unexpected, but for Shweta Menon, who has now taken charge as president, the decision carried an even deeper meaning. "When Lalettan resigned, it was an even bigger shock than the report itself," she told Hollywood Reporter India. According to her, Mohanlal might have felt cornered or isolated, which possibly pushed him towards making such a drastic move.

Shweta reflects on leadership and character

Having worked under Mohanlal’s leadership for six years, Shweta spoke with a sense of both admiration and sorrow. “He is not someone who accepts defeat easily. That decision didn’t seem like his nature at all,” she remarked, underlining how unusual the step appeared to those who knew his style of functioning. Even though she was not part of the executive committee at that moment, she firmly believes the resignation must have weighed heavily on him.

Addressing controversies and rebuilding trust

As the new president, Menon has shifted focus to the challenges ahead. She confirmed that a committee will be formed to investigate the much-discussed memory card controversy involving actor Kuku Parameswaran.

During AMMA’s first executive meeting under her leadership, complaints among members were openly discussed, with sub-committees planned to resolve them. “We will listen to everyone’s problems,” she assured.

There is also growing demand to bring back artists who distanced themselves from AMMA amid past controversies. On the work front, Shwetha Menon was last seen in the web series ' Nagendran's Honeymoons' which starred Suraj Venjaramoodu in the lead.
