‘Thenmavin Kombathu’ directed by Priyadarshan featured Mohanlal, Nedumudi Venu, and Shobana in the lead roles. The romantic comedy featured Shobana as Karthumbi, a dancer, who is the love interest of Manikyan (Mohanlal). The evergreen film is a perfect entertainer, rich with spectacular visions, compelling plot, impeccable performances, and colorful songs.
'Thenmavin Kombathu' is possibly one of the evergreen classics the M-Town audience has ever witnessed. Even as the movie is marking its 25th anniversary, the film still remains afresh and novel! The Priyadarshan directorial film has never missed entertaining the audience, till date. The movie also had the best on-screen couple, Mohanlal and Shobana, exhibiting the finesse in acting. As we celebrate the 25th year of the classic movie, here's a look at the top 5 moments we can't miss about 'Thenmavin Kombathu.'
Actors Shobana and Mohanlal were one of the most celebrated on-screen couples of the 90s. The duo had unbeatable chemistry which made them the favourite among the audience and hence people always loved to see them together. 'Thenmavin Kombath' is possibly one of the best in the duo's career. The fights, the love and the affection for each other literally lit the screens on fire. Shobana's folk-inspired appearance and the cute fights she had with Mohanlal on-screen stills remains so raw and fresh. The Karthumbi and Manikyan's love for each other is so inspiring. When the duo combined with a film-maker like Priyadarshan, the result was memorable.
K.V. Anand was a debutant when Priyadarshan asked him to handle the visuals of 'Thenmavin Kombath.' As Anand was interested in cinematography, he asked the veteran cinematographer, P.C. Sreeram if he could assist him and P.C. Sreeram agreed. Anand then worked in films like 'Gopura Vasalile', 'Amaran', 'Meera', 'Devar Magan' and 'Thiruda Thiruda' as the sixth assistant to Sreeram. The cinematographer hasn't done an independent project yet, but Priyadarshan chose to invite him. The risk was huge, but the risk definitely was of worth. K. V. Anand made his debut cinematography venture an incomparable piece of art. The brilliant visuals still remain unclonable, even in the era of high-end technologies. The movie won the National Award for best cinematography, which made K. V. Anand rise into his legacy.
The iconic dialogue "Thaan aaranennu thanikkariyillenkil" still remains as one of the major brain-twister the Malayalam films has ever seen. The twisty question not only creates laugher but also showcases the mastery of dialogue delivery the actor Kuthiravattam Pappu had! The scene has even become one of the most used memes from the Mollywood cinemas. The dialogue that reads, "Thaan aaranennu thanikkariyillenkil than ennodu chodikku thaan aaranennu, thanikk njan paranju tharam thaan aaranenn. Ennit njan aaranenn enik ariyamo, than ennod chodhikk. Apo thanikk njan paranju tharam thaan aaranennum, njan aaranennum," means 'If you don't know who you are, then ask me 'who you are', I will tell you who you are. Then you ask me if I know who I am. Then I will tell you who you are and who I am.'
Mudhugauv, the word Mohanlal seeks and ends up in some idiotic circumstances. The word Mudhugauv means kiss and the term was used in the movie. It is probably the first Malayalam movie to use the term. When Shobana teasingly pronounces the word, Mohanlal couldn't understand its meaning as it isn't a Malayalam word. So Manikyan (the character played by Mohanlal) goes seeking its meaning which eventually lands him in trouble. The word became so popular that, in 2016 a movie titled 'Mudhugauv' hit the screens.
Regarded as one of the evergreen classics made in 1990s, 'Thenmavin Kombath' which had Mohanlal and Shobhana in the lead roles, is preparing for a re-release in 4K resolution. E4entertainment will bring this highly acclaimed Priyadarshan movie back to theaters after digital remastering.
The movie, which had Nedumudi Venu, Kaviyoor Ponnamma, Sreenivasan, Kuthiravattam Pappu and KPAC Lalitha in important roles, became popular for its timeless comedy. The film released in 1994 and garnered two National Awards and five State Awards. The on-screen chemistry between Mohanlal and Shobhana, hilarious scenes, and excellent acting by the cast made it a success at the box office in 1994.
Mohanlal and Shobana’s chemistry in the film was remarkable, and the dialogues from the film are still a hit on new media.
Meanwhile, Shobana had recently shared a throwback picture, taken back in 1988, and it set the internet ablaze. “1988 pic taken by the Maestro Mr @dirrajivmenon The days of NO DI edit photoshoppe what may you have ,” she captioned, and the picture surely won the hearts of netizens.
