Suresh Gopi is celebrating his birthday today. The superstar turned 63 today and wishes are pouring in for the star. Filmmaker
Shaji Kailas, who is a dear friend of Suresh Gopi and has also directed the superstar numerous times has penned an endearing note on their relationship on and off-screen.
“It was in 1989, I first directed a film for the first time - ‘News’. I had both scripted and directed the film. While preparing the first draft of the film, the protagonist - Rishi Menon had Suresh Gopi’s avatar. And that gave us both the confidence to move forward with the film. It was Suresh’s first solo hit film. Along with the success, that film also gave me a good friend and brother. And later when we collaborated together for ‘Thalasthanam’ in 1991, the audience received the film with even more enthusiasm. It was ‘Thalasthanam’ that gave me the clarity about the films I want to do in the future. Later, we did films like ‘Commissioner’, ‘Ekalavyan’ and ‘
Mafia
’ and the audience accepted all of them,” Shaji Kailas said.
The filmmaker also spoke about how Suresh Gopi is an integral part of his life offscreen. Shaji Kailas recalled Suresh Gopi working with
Annie, whom the filmmaker later married. “Our wedding also took place at Suresh's house,” Shaji Kailas added.
Shaji Kailas also expressed that he was more attracted towards the good person Suresh Gopi is rather than the actor in him. He added that Suresh Gopi remained the same person, despite the ups and downs in the star’s career.
