Restored classics ‘Olavum Theeravum’, ‘Vasthuhara’ and ‘Bhoothakannadi’ to be screened at IFFK 2023
The 28th edition of the International Film Festival of Kerala (IFFK) is all set to commence this Friday, December 8, and this year, the film enthusiasts and filmmakers are in for a treat. 2K restored versions of Malayalam classics ‘Olavum Theeravum’, ‘Vasthuhara’ and ‘Bhoothakannadi’ will be screened in this festival.
The organizers of IFFK announced the exciting news, and the movie aficionados are thrilled. “Discover cinematic treasures with Restored Classics by Chalachitra Academy at 28th IFFK: 'Olavum Theerum/Waves and The Shore' (PN Menon), 'Vasthuhara/ The Dispossessed ' (G Aravindan), and 'Bhoothakannadi/ The Magnifying Glass' (AK Lohithadas). Journey through the essence of timeless storytelling in 2k. #IFFK #28IFFK #IFFK2023,” the organizers said in a note.
‘Olavum Theeravum/ Waves and the Shore’ released in 1969 is directed by PN Menon. Based on MT Vasudevan Nair's eponymous short story, ‘Olavum Theeravum’ has legendary actor Madhu playing the lead role. The film tells the story of a young boatman, who goes in search of his close friend’s estranged family, to inform them about his death. He falls in love with the decased’s sister, though he is aware that her mother is a prostitute. Things go south when the mother tries to marry off the daughter to a rich man. Madhu played the role of Baputty, while Ushanandini stepped into the shoes of Nabeesa. ‘Olavum Theeravum’ will be screened on Sunday, the third day of the festival.
‘Vasthuhara/ The Dispossessed’, released in 1991 features Mohanlal in the lead role. Helmed by iconic G Aravindan, the film unfolds the story of Venu, an officer working for the Rehabilitation Ministry in the Andaman Islands, while on duty at Calcutta, selects refugees to be taken to the islands. ‘Vasthuhara’ will be screened on Saturday, the second day of the festival.
AK Lohithadas’ ‘Bhoothakkannadi/ The Magnifying Lens’ starring Mammootty portrays the life of Vidyadharan, a clocksmith, who is a widower and lives for his only daughter. His life takes an unexpected turn when a girl gets murdered. The film was released in 1997. ‘Bhoothakkannadi’ will be screened on the 7th day of the festival.
Hosted by the Kerala State Chalachitra Academy on behalf of the Department of Cultural Affairs, Government of Kerala, and held at the capital city of Thiruvananthapuram, the 28th edition of IFFK will wrap on December 15.
