Real-life identical twins that charmed on reel
From the creepy Grady twins in The Shining to the hilarious Weasley twins of the Harry Potter movies, fictional twins have always managed to steal the show. But it has never been easy to find identical ones in real life to essay the roles.
Mollywood has got its first such real life pair in Aina and Aima, who play the lead actresses in the upcoming release Dooram. Its director Manu Kannamthanam tells us that he had auditioned 30 identical twins before zeroing in on the Dubai-based duo. “We could have got an actress to play a double role, but having twins essay the two lead roles will make it authentic and different,” says Manu.
We agree, and take a look at some of the best known twins as actors who charmed their way to the silver screen across industries.
Teena and Tessa Vellara The Bangalore-based Malayali babes made their debut in the Bollywood film Shandaar as two uber cool sisters who deliver catchy phrases. Their claim to fame was the Bollywood version of the Mime Through Time music video by SketchShe that went viral online. The duo also seems to be following the Olsen twins’ path with their entrepreneurial ventures. While Tessa runs a cake business, Teena has her own clothing line.
Raghu Ram and Rajiv Laxman Rajiv and Raghu could be Bollywood’s most famous “angry twins”, thanks to their abrasive and outspoken ways as the judges of the Roadies show. The two did a 180 for Akshay Kumar-starrer Tees Maar Khan in which they played goofy villains, the Johri Brothers, who were conjoined twins.
Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen The Olsen twins are the most famous and arguably the richest twins in the entertainment industry. They shot to fame with their role in the series Full House in which they shared the role of Michelle Tanner. At age of six, the duo went on to found their own production company and now at 29, are heading their fashion line. They are expected to return to acting with next year’s reunion of Full House.

James and Oliver Phelps Easily the most loved fictional twins of the last decade, the Phelps brothers essayed the troublesome Fred and George Weasley, respectively, in all eight Harry Potter movies. The twins were selected after six auditions for their hilarious parts. Interestingly, unlike their fictional counterparts who belonged to the Gryffindor house, James and Oliver revealed they were sorted to Hufflepuff by a Harry Potter app.
Sumeet and Saahil Goradia Maybe twins are a sort of lucky charm for Farah Khan, who had also had twins in her movie, Tees Maar Khan. The choreographer-turned-director cast Sumeet and Saahil in minor, comic roles for her debut movie Main Hoon Na. The duo have gone on to become choreographers themselves and have appeared in several dance reality shows. They are also training celebrities.
Aaron and Shawn Ashmore The Ashmore twins are famous for their superhero acts with Shawn playing Iceman in the X-Men movies and Aaron appearing as Jimmy Olsen in Smallville series. The two have appeared together in the latter series and also shared roles in movies such as Married to It and My Brother’s Keeper. They have said they like the same type of girls but often let the girls choose. Aaron is the elder one by a minute but good luck trying to find out who’s who when the two appear together!
