‘RDX’ to ‘Romancham’: 2023's sleeper hits that stole the show

The Malayalam film industry faced significant challenges in 2023, with a vast majority of the 300-plus films struggling to find success. However, amidst this, a handful of movies emerged triumphant despite starting with minimal expectations and lacking A-list actors. These sleeper hits relied solely on their content quality to captivate audiences. As the year draws to a close, it's time to highlight these unexpected successes that defied the odds in 2023.

‘Neymar’

Naslen and Mathew Thomas, the dynamic duo from 'Thaneer Mathan Dinangal,' showcased their magnetic pull with 'Neymar,' indicating a substantial following among family audiences who readily book tickets based on their involvement. Beyond their pairing, 'Neymar' captured hearts through its precise storytelling and notably, the central dog character. The first half set the stage for a family drama which then turned out to be a highly engaging mass film. Directed by Sudhi Maddison, 'Neymar' skillfully blended family-centric elements with engaging storytelling.

‘Madhura Manohara Moham’

‘Madhura Manohara Moham’ directed by the debutant Stephy Zaviour, is a shining example of how to draw the audiences to the theatres with a simple family drama movie. The movie had the perfect blend of humor and family emotions and the audiences felt connected to the character Manu played by actor Sharafudheen. ‘Madhura Manohara Moham’ added a different twist to a normal family drama, and the performances of Rajisha Vijayan, Sharafudheen, and Bindu Panicker are surely commendable.

‘RDX’

‘RDX’ directed by debutant Nahas Hidayath is a clear example of how to execute a complete action package with the perfect blend of emotions. ‘RDX’ faced several trolls for its first look poster and due to its release date alongside Dulquer Salmaan’s most awaited biggie ‘King of Kotha’. In a surprising turn of events, ‘RDX’ turned out to be the Onam winner, whereas ‘King of Kotha’ hardly earned a break-even profit at the box office. Starring Shane Nigam, Antony Varghese, and Neeraj Madhav in the lead, what makes ‘RDX’ stand out from the rest of the action flicks is due to its emotional core that hooks the audiences to the theatres.

‘Romancham’

The success of Soubin Shahir and Arjun Ashokan’s horror film ‘Romancham’ is an example of how positive word of mouth affects a movie. With a blend of realistic style comedies and horror build-up, ‘Romancham’ stands out as one of the unique theatrical experiences of 2023 that cannot be recreated in an OTT viewing. The movie also works mostly due to Sushin Shyam’s terrific background and Jithu Madhavan’s expert direction.

‘Falimy’

With ‘Falimy’, Basil Joseph proves that he has the knack to entertain audiences with his unique acting skills. Not only Basil, the film also showcases the magnificent acting prowess of the actors Jagadish, and Manju Pillai. Nithish Sahadev, in his directorial debut, tells the story of a dysfunctional family that takes on a trip to Varanasi. ‘Falimy’ has reportedly crossed Rs 15 crores within 3 weeks, which is impressive for a movie made on a low budget.
