Raksha Bandhan 2022: Malayalam movies that celebrate brother-sister bond

No matter the humongous budget or huge-scale promotional techniques that are invested for a film, what matters is emotion and mainly most filmmakers try to keep an emotional balance for their storyline with the inclusion of brother-sister love. Coming to the Malayalam film industry, from Mini in ‘Aniyathipraavu’ to Hitler Madhavan in the Mammootty starrer ‘Hitler’, there are several brother-sister characters who stay in our memory lane for a long time. On this special occasion of ‘Raksha Bandhan’, let's take a look at the times when Mollywood portrayed the best brother-sister bonds.

‘Koode’

Prithviraj Sukumaran - Nazriya Nazim starrer feel-good drama ‘Koode’ is the latest entry into the films that portrayed brother-sister bonds. Although the film handles a very depressing subject, the director Anjali Menon has kept a very light tone coupled with feel-good and humor elements. ‘Koode’ tells the story of a young man who has lost his sister and the story progresses as he reflects on his childhood days. ‘Koode’ also maintains a fantasy element throughout the storytelling. Actors Prithviraj Sukumaran, Nazriya Nazim, Roshan Mathew, Parvathy Thiruvothu, and Ranjith played major roles in this feel-good entertainer.

‘Ustaad’

The song ‘Vennila Kombile’ from the movie ‘Ustaad’ is etched in our memory solely for the reason that the sequences in the song portrayed pure brother-sister bonding. Although the Mohanlal starrer is an action entertainer, the pivotal emotional base of the film is indeed brother-sister love. Mohanlal and Divyaa Unni played the sibling characters Parameswaran and Padmaja in the movie which was directed by the veteran filmmaker Sibi Malayil. Actors Vineeth, Saikumar, and Chitra also played significant roles in this action thriller.

‘Chronic Bachelor’

Mollywood filmmaker Siddique is best known for using the scriptwriting method of family relationships and most of his films including ‘Godfather’ are indeed the most supreme examples for this. Coming to the Mammootty starrer ‘Chronic Bachelor', the director specifically tried to engage the audience with the love bonding between the brother and sister characters played by Mammootty and Bhavana. ‘Chronic Bachelor’ was a humongous hit during the year 2003 and the film was also remade into Tamil and Telugu languages with the title ‘Engal Anna’ and ‘Kushi Kushinga’.

‘Pavithram’

‘Pavithram’ is literally the most depressing movie in Mollywood that is based on brother-sister bonding. The film deals with a strong relationship between the siblings Unnikrishnan and Meenakshi who have an almost 30-year age difference between them. The climax sequence of TK Rajeev Kumar’s directorial movie would melt your heart and Mohanlal bagged the Filmfare Award for Best Actor for his performance in the drama movie. ‘Pavithram’ also had the gifted writer P Balachandran who penned down the script for the film and also had a casting coup. Actors Shobana, Vindhuja Menon, KPAC Lalitha, Innocent and Thilakan also played significant roles in the movie.
