‘Jesus’ to ‘St Thomas’: Movies to watch on Holy Week

As the holy week is considered to be the most sacred week in the liturgical year in Christianity, it’s the perfect holiday to contemplate Jesus who went through sufferings for sinners. For a movie buff, the week can be dedicated to exploring more about the movies that are made on Christianity and prophets who spread the word of god. As today is Good Friday, Here let’s take a look at some of the Christian Malayalam movies you can watch this Holy Week.

PA Thomas’ 1973 film ‘Jesus’ can be considered the only Malayalam movie that is based on the life story of Jesus and the movie was also dubbed in Tamil and Telugu. The director PA Thomas wrote the script for the film that covers the rule of King Herod to the resurrection of Jesus. Actor Muralidas played the role of Jesus in the movie and ‘Jesus’ marks the only Malayalam movie acted by Jayalalithaa.

Two years after the success of ‘Jesus’, the director PA Thomas helmed another Christian movie based on the life of the Apostle Thomasleeha. Popular actor Mohan Sharma essayed the role of Saint Thomas in the movie which covers his deeds ranging from establishing Seven and Half Churches (Ezharappallikal’) to spreading the Gospel among Jews and locals in Kerala.

Lijo Jose Pellissery’s ‘Amen’ could be the best option if you want to relax this Holy Week and have some good laughs. Tight performances and a strong script are indeed the highlights of this Fahadh Faasil starrer. Lijo Jose Pellissery’s terrific direction really makes the viewers involved in the wonderful romantic tale of Solomon and Soshanna.

Although the 1966 film ‘Kadamattathachan’ cannot be said as a movie based on Jesus or any of his 12 apostles, the Prem Nazir starrer tells the story of a priest who dedicated his entire life to god. George Thariyan’s directorial followed the story of a priest named ‘Kadamattathu Kathanar’ who is believed to have possessed supernatural powers and protects a wild tribe against evils.
