Words were his friends and imagination his soulmate. ONV Kurup's relationship with words began at a very young age. As a child, he used to pen down the things he would see and feel. The epic Ramayana, and the folklore and ballads influenced him. ONV Kurup was eight when he lost his father. It was like ‘sunset at noon’, ONV Kurup once said, about his father’s demise. He had learned the basics of

and Sanskrit from his dad and held that close to his heart. ONV was a teenager when his first poem ‘Munnottu’ (Forward) was published. From ‘Munnoottu’ to the famous ‘Bhumikku Oru Charama Geetham’ - a dirge for Earth, ONV Kurup’s literary works were mystic, pure, timeless, and straight from the heart.

Apart from poetry and prose, ONV Kurup has also penned lyrics to numerous Malayalam songs.

As we are observing his birthday anniversary today, let’s take a look at some of his contributions to Malayalam cinema.
