Onam is finally here. The harvest festival and the homecoming of King Mahabali is celebrated with much enthusiasm and excitement in Kerala. From reuniting with family members to having delectable Onam sadhya, Malyalis across the globe observe the festival with zeal.
Speaking exclusively to ETimes, award-winning musician
Hesham Abdul Wahab speaks about his earliest memories of Onam, and also shares his plans for celebrating the festival this year.
Though the ‘Hridayam’ music director is a Malayali, he was born and raised in Saudi Arabia. And for him, Onam is all about the festivities. “For Onam, we would book a hall or auditorium. Since most of us (Malayalis) living there have compact hybrid families, there are rarely any relatives for the celebrations. So, we all gather for the Onam, sing songs, participate in the program, and of course, have Onam sadhya. After coming to Kerala, I was constantly travelling. However, last year, I got to celebrate Onam with my wife Ayshath and our families,” Hesham recalled.
When asked about what’s the most exciting part about Onam, he added, “Another interesting thing about the festival is watching movies. I am excited about all the Onam releases! I am really thrilled about watching all the releases that are going to come out this Onam. So, that’s how Onam will be for me this year.”
On the work front, Hesham Abdul Wahab has some exciting upcoming projects including ‘Brahmastra’ and ‘Kushi’. Hesham has sung two songs for the Malayalam version of the magnum opus. The talented musician is also marking his debut in Telugu with ‘Kushi’, which has Samantha and Vijay Devarakonda in the lead roles.
