Legendary Malayalam filmmaker KG George passed away on Sunday (Sep 24). He was 77. The National Film Archive of India (NFAI), India’s media unit formed under the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting has expressed their grief in the passing away of the veteran.

NFAI joined the film fraternity in mourning the passing of the legendary Malayalam filmmaker KG George. With an illustrious career spanning decades, KG George leaves behind a legacy that continues to shape the landscape of Malayalam cinema.

In a note shared via their social media, NFAI wrote, “We are deeply saddened by the passing away of the pioneering writer and director K.G. George (1946-2023).”

The organization also celebrated the life and works of KG George, a pioneer of the Malayalam New Wave cinema movement.

In their note, NFAI said, “An alumnus of the Film and Television Institute of India (FTII), George emerged as one of the most original voices in cinema in the 1970s with his Malayalam feature film debut Swapnadanam (1975). During the 1970s and 1980s, George wrote and directed films that explored experiences and perspectives previously unexplored in Indian cinema. Straddling critical and commercial acclaim with ease and finesse, K.G. George's groundbreaking filmography includes Mannu (1978), Mela (1980), Yavanika (1982), Lekhayude Maranam - Oru Flashback (1983), Adaminte Variyal (1984), Panchavadi Palam (1984), Irakal (1985) and Ee Kanni Koodi (1990) among others. An irreparable loss to world cinema, his work will remain beloved and inspiring for generations to come. #KGGeorge.”
