Expectations are huge for ‘Neelavelicham’ among the audience, as it is based on the most celebrated works of the veteran Malayalam writer

Vaikom Muhammad Basheer

with the same title. Earlier his short story was adapted into a movie by the name ‘

Bhargavi

Nilayam’ starring Prem Nazir, Madhu, and Vijaya Nirmala in lead roles. ‘Bhargavi Nilayam’, which was released in 1964, is considered the first Malayalam horror film.

Earlier ‘Neelavelicham’ was planned with the actors Prithviraj Sukumaran, Kunchacko Boban, and Soubin Shahir who were later replaced by Tovino Thomas, Roshan Mathew, and Shine Tom Chacko respectively as the former actors faced some date clashes. Actress Rima Kallingal plays the female lead in the film and she will be presumably reprising Vijaya Nirmala’s ghost character Bhargavi from the original movie.

‘Neelavelicham’ has a huge anticipation level from the audience as it will be the first time that the ace director Aashiq Abu is attempting a horror genre. Aashiq Abu’s ‘Neelavelicham’ has the writer Hrishikesh Bhaskaran to pen down an additional screenplay.

Meanwhile, Aashiq Abu’s previous outing was with the Tovino Thomas starrer ‘Naradan’. The film received mixed responses from the audience and the actors Indrans, Anna Ben, Sharafudheen, Vijayaraghavan, and Renji Panicker in significant roles.
