Nayanthara on facing body-shaming and backlash for bikini scene in ‘Billa’: It was an issue for everyone

The Lady superstar Nayanthara opened up about some of the most challenging moments of her career in her documentary, Nayanthara: Beyond The Fairytale.

For the unversed, the documentary delves into the personal and professional struggles faced by the actress, including her experiences with body-shaming and backlash.

Recalling the lowest point of her career, Nayanthara revealed the criticism she faced during the release of Suriya’s blockbuster film 'Ghajini'. “The lowest point was the film Ghajini. There were days when I used to see all the comments, and people were like, ‘Why is she even acting? Why is she even there in the film? She’s so fat,’” the actress shared in the documentary.


The backlash didn’t end there. When Nayanthara donned a bikini for a pivotal scene in the 2007 film ‘Billa’, it became a contentious issue. She recalled, “The whole drama was about the bikini scene that I did, which was an issue for everyone. But I thought… that’s how everything changes, right?”


Nayanthara clarified that her choice to wear the bikini wasn’t to make a statement but to fulfill the director’s vision for the scene. “I did it not because I wanted to prove a point; I did it because my director told me that’s the scene. It was necessary, so I did it. And I think it kind of worked for me,” she added.


On the work front, Nayanthara was last seen in the SRK starrer ‘Jawan’. Even with mixed responses from the audiences, ‘Jawan’ turned out to be an all-time blockbuster.
