Narain goes rustic for Tamil film
Narain, who has been missing from the Mollywood scene for a while, is busy elsewhere. The actor is shooting for a Tamil film, tentatively titled Kathukutty directed by Era Saravanan, set in a village in Tamil Nadu.
“It is basically a humorous film but the subject is quite powerful. This is the first time I’m playing such a rustic character. I play a very rebellious son of a much respected man in the village.

He gets into all kinds of trouble but at the end he turns out to be the one who fights for the villagers and saves them during a crisis.”
His look for the film is so different from his usual, urban ones that he couldn’t recognise himself, says Narain. “I have a rough beard and look all uncouth. Because of that, I haven’t been able to take up any other film as this look doesn’t suit any other
character.”
The shoot was a different experience altogether, he says. “The dialect used in the film is a very local one, which is used solely in certain villages near Thanjavoor. While I could recognise some of the words as we have similar ones in Malayalam, some of the crew couldn’t, as they were nowhere near Chennai Tamil! Also, the location was so far flung that there would be no mobile signal there,” he says.
Although it was the Tamil film which kept him from taking up films in Malayalam, he finds it a necessity to give priority to one industry over the other, he says. “I felt I have a bigger market in Tamil films which is why I chose Tamil over Malayalam. But that said, it is indeed the best of times for the Malayalam industry. I saw the film Bangalore Days and loved it. I would love to be a part of the new wave of films,” he signs off.
