Manoj Aravindakshan’s Swargathekkal Sundaram is a film where three actresses have strong, prominent roles and are not ‘mere dolls’ in the director’s own words. Mythili plays one of the important characters in the film, a bold and beautiful character called ‘Touchings Jaya’. The reason for such an unusual name, the director says, is that, she works as someone who supplies ‘touchings’ or snacks to various bars. “Her father was an alcoholic, and she had to regularly haul him out of bars. She became a familiar figure to the people who visit the bars, and following her father’s death, she decides to make a living out of bars by supplying the touchings people have with their drinks – peanuts and other snacks.” However, it is a powerful character, crucial to the story, he adds
While Muthumani plays a lady doctor in the film, Asha Aravind dons the character of Sreenivasan’s wife. Swargathekkal Sundaram has Lal and Sreenivasan playing two close friends, who enter into a joint business which flourishes. An incident happens in Sreenivasan’s character’s life, following which everything goes haywire. “The bond between the two friends is the central thread of the film, but the film has a lot of humour in it. Everything happens in the span of a single day,” says the director.
