Actor-writer-filmmaker
Murali Gopy paid a tribute on the 25th death anniversary of the great filmmaker
Manmohan Desai who directed some of
Amitabh Bachchan’s mass hits of the 1980s, such as ‘Coolie’ and ‘Mard’. He is believed to have created the masala genre of films, and Murali Gopy alludes to this in his post.
“Here’s rememberjng the great film maker, Manmohan Desai, who dared to make his own indigenous brand of cinematic yarn, while still in a peer group that either succumbed fully to western story-telling norms or played safe within the ‘awarding’ lines of realism.
The juries called him “escapist”. He would have called them.., perhaps, ‘Slaves of norm!’,” says Murali Gopy.
