Mohanlal's 'Karmayodha' script case verdict: Major Ravi faces court setback; Rs 30 lakh compensation ordered
After a long wait of 13 years, the court has finally delivered its verdict in the script dispute which is related to Mohanlal’s 2012 action film 'Karmayodha' which was directed by Major Ravi. The case, which focused on who owned the story and screenplay of the film, ended with a major setback for director Major Ravi.
According to Live Law website, the Kottayam Commercial Court ruled that the story, screenplay, and dialogues of 'Karmayodha' belong to Reji Mathew who is a screenwriter from Puthuppally, Kottayam.
Reportedly, the court accepted his claim that his work was used without permission while making the film. With this ruling, the court clearly stated that Reji Mathew is the rightful creator of the script.
The court also ordered a compensation of Rs 30 lakh to be paid to the complainant. In addition to this, the court ordered that the copyright of the film be handed over to Reji Mathew.
Reji Mathew had approached the court one month before the film’s release in 2012, asking for a stay on the release. After he deposited Rs 5 lakh, the court allowed the film to be released, while clearly noting that there was a dispute over the story, screenplay, and dialogues. Despite this, the film was released with Shaji and Sumesh named as the scriptwriters, which later became a key point in the case.
Major Ravi was named as the first accused in the case. Producer Haneef Mohammed, Shaji S.V., Sumesh, and Robin were also listed as accused. Major Ravi argued that the story was his own and said he had discussed it with many writers, including Reji Mathew.
On the other hand, Major Ravi had recently announced his next project which is inspired by real-life military missions. The pooja ceremony happened at the Mookambika Temple.
