Mohanlal on stepping down as AMMA president; says ‘time to put a full stop’; opens up on facing criticisms

Malayalam superstar Mohanlal has, for the first time, openly addressed his decision to step down as president of the Association of Malayalam Movie Artists (AMMA). Speaking in an interview on the occasion of Thiruvonam, the actor explained that his resignation was a conscious decision, not one forced by criticism.

In an interview with Asianet News, Mohanlal said, “I faced a lot of criticism. Suddenly, we became enemies to many people. But the resignations were not because of the criticism. I resigned when I felt it was time to put a full stop.” His words mark his first candid response on the AMMA leadership change after months of silence. Mohanlal added that he saw his exit not as defeat, but as part of a natural process of leadership transition.

Women in leadership and hopes for unity

The veteran actor welcomed the fact that women have now taken on leadership roles within AMMA, calling it a “positive change.” He also expressed hope that those who had left the body due to disagreements should consider returning.

Shwetha Menon’s reaction to Mohanlal's decision

Following Mohanlal’s resignation, actress Shwetha Menon was elected president of AMMA — the first time a woman has held the role in the association’s history.

In an earlier interview with The Hollywood Reporter India, Shwetha acknowledged how unexpected Mohanlal’s decision was. “The release of the Hema Committee report was already a shocking moment for everyone. When Lalettan stepped down, it became even more shocking. It must have been a very big decision for him. He is not someone who accepts defeat easily,” she said. Shwetha added that having worked under his leadership for six years, his sudden resignation felt uncharacteristic.

Meanwhile on the work front, Mohanlal was recently seen in the Sathyan Anthikad starrer 'Hridayapoorvam'.
