‘Manichitrathazhu’ vs ‘Chandramukhi’: Nikhila Vimal recalls arguing with Prabhu

Malayalam films have always stood out for their content and storytelling. It’s no surprise that filmmakers from other parts of the nation turn to Mollywood for inspiration. Over the years, many Malayalam films have been remade in various Indian and international languages. Fazil’s 1993 release ‘Manichitrathazhu’ is one such film. ‘Manichitrathazhu’ starring Shobana, Suresh Gopi, and Mohanlal was remade in Tamil, Kannada, Bengali, and Hindi. Actor Nikhila Vimal has now recalled the time when she argued with Prabhu about which version is better.

‘Manichitrathazhu’ vs ‘Chandramukhi’

During a recent conversation with The Cue Studio, Nikhila Vimal was asked to name three Malayalam films she would recommend to non-Malayalees. Her first pick was ‘Kishkindha Kaandam’ starring Asif Ali and Vijaya Raghavan, followed by Priyamani-Prithviraj Sukumaran-Anoop Menon starrer ‘Thirakatha’ and ‘Manichitrathazhu’.





When the host asked why everyone is obsessed with ‘Manichitrathazhu’, Nikhila Vimal revealed that she even had a heated argument with a senior actor over the film.

"I like that movie. I have also gotten into an argument earlier that Manichithrathazhu is better than Chandramukhi... with Prabhu sir, who was the (co-) producer,” she said.

All about ‘Manichitrathazhu’

Directed by acclaimed filmmaker Fazil, ‘Manichitrathazhu’ is an epic psychological thriller. Released in 1993, the film revolves around a young couple, Nakulan and Ganga, who return to his ancestral home, which is believed to be haunted. Suresh Gopi essayed the role of Nakulan, while veteran Shobana played Ganga. Mohanlal appeared in an extended cameo to play the psychiatrist, Sunny. Veteran actors such as Thilakan, Nedumudi Venu, Innocent, and KPAC Lalitha are also part of the cast. Actors Vinaya Prasad, Sridhar, KB Ganesh Kumar, and Sudheesh play some pivotal roles in the film. ‘Manichitrathazhu’ was a blockbuster and had a successful theatrical run of 300 days. The film won two National awards - Best Popular Film Providing Wholesome Entertainment, and Best Actress (Shobana). 'Manichitrathazhu' also won 3 Kerala State film awards. The film was recently re-released in 2024 after over 30 years. The restored 4K resolution with Dolby Atmos sound version of the film received an impressive response in the theatres.
