Rahul Raj further wrote, “When I was in first or second grade, pretending to lie on the bed watching TV as if I were a grown-up made her eyes well up with tears. She went and took a loan just to buy a TV for me. Back in the day, National Book publishers had schemes where books could be bought in bulk for amounts like a thousand or two thousand rupees, and you could pay it off in installments. One evening, Mommy returned from Hill Palace (P.S.: back then, Cochin University functioned out of Hill Palace, Thripunithura) carrying a red basket full of books! And what a variety they were! Books that sparked scientific curiosity in children, books purely for entertainment, books on mathematics, mysteries of the universe, mythology, short plays, children’s Qur’an, Bible stories – a diverse collection indeed.”

The music composer added that his mother even called the carpenter and had him make a three-tiered shelf with a label on it that read ‘Library’.
“After that, that red basket often came back filled with books. Each time, it brought new books, and along with them, new knowledge, “ Rahul Raj concluded.
