Malayalam filmmaker Ashokan aka Raman Ashok Kumar passed away on Sunday (Sep 25). He was 60. He returned from Singapore recently and was undergoing treatment at a private hospital in Kochi, Kerala, where he breathed his last.

A native of Varkala, Ashokan started his career in cinema as an assistant to filmmaker Sasi Kumar. He worked as an assistant director for about 25 years, and in 1989, Ashokan made his debut as a filmmaker with 'Varnam'. 'Varnam' had an ensemble cast of Jayaram, Suresh Gopi, Ranjini, Thilakan, Meena, Jagathy Sreekumar, Parvathy, and Mukesh among others, and the film received critical acclaim. A year later, in 1990, he teamed up with filmmaker Thaha and co-directed 'Saandaram' starring Suresh Gopi and Parvathy. In 1991, he reunited with Thaha and co-directed 'Mookkilla Rajyathu', a slapstick comedy featuring Mukesh, Thilakan, Jagathy Sreekumar, Siddique, and Vinaya Prasad. 'Mookkilla Rajyathu' was well received and was successful. Post that, in 1993, Ashokan helmed 'Aacharyan', starring Thilakan, Suresh Gopi, and Sreenivasan, and the film too managed to grab eyeballs. After that Ashokan reportedly moved to Singapore and focused on business, but he was always passionate about films. He went on to direct a telefilm titled 'Kaanappurangal', which won him the Kerala State Award for best telefilm.

Meanwhile, the filmmaker's funeral will be held on Tuesday (Sep 27), at his residence in Varkala. Ashokan is survived by his wife Seetha and their daughter Abhirami.
