Mollywood’s visionary director Lijo Jose Pellissery recently reacted to the criticisms that his most-awaited Mohanlal starrer ‘Malaikottai Vaaliban’ has faced. Reacting to the criticisms, LJP said a director’s ultimate job is not to keep up with the audience's expectations, whereas he or she should be able to create a change in the audience's tastes.
During a talk with Galatta Plus, Lijo Jose Pellissery said that with ‘Malaikottai Vaaliban’ he was trying to pay a tribute to the memorable and classic movie sequences that everyone watched during their childhood days. “I wanted to re-create those moments where Kamal sir, Amitabh Bachchan rocked the theatre screens. ‘Malaikottai Vaaliban’ was aimed at creating a montage of those memorable movie scenes which we saw in theatres during our childhood days.”
Lijo Jose Pellissery further said that ‘Malaikottai Vaaliban’s response was not something that they expected and it took only three weeks for him to overcome the sadness due to the mixed reaction to the Mohanlal starrer.
LJP added that a director’s job is to make a change in the audience's tastes and enhance their movie viewing quality rather than delivering films that they expect from him or her. He said, “A director’s job shouldn’t be only delivering films that satisfy the expectation levels of the audiences. He or she should be able to enhance the movie watching quality of the audiences and make a shift in their tastes. A director’s job is also to influence the audiences on what they prefer to watch,” Lijo Jose Pellissery said.
Meanwhile, the expectations were high among the audiences as Mohanlal was teaming up with Lijo Jose Pellissery for ‘Malaikottai Vaaliban’. The slow paced movie didn’t satisfy the audiences who came in to watch a high-voltage action drama film with a massive clap-worthy introduction sequences and other entertainment factors.
