The Kerala High Court has rejected a plea to quash criminal proceedings in a cheating case involving the producers of the Malayalam blockbuster ‘Manjummel Boys’.
As reported by the Bar and Bench website, the ruling allows the ongoing police investigation into the alleged profit dispute to continue, spelling fresh trouble for the film’s makers.
Court dismisses plea by producers
The petition was filed by actor-producer Soubin Shahir and his fellow producers Babu Shahir and Shawn Antony, who jointly bankrolled the film under the Parava Films banner.
A single bench led by Justice VG Arun dismissed the plea, stating that the case merits further investigation. The producers had sought to quash the proceedings, but the court maintained that the legal process should take its course.
Complaint over unfulfilled profit promise
The case was registered by the Maradu police based on a complaint filed by Siraj Valiyathara Hameed, a resident of Aroor. Siraj alleged that he was promised a 40% share of the film’s profits in return for an investment of Rs 7 crore.
Despite ‘Manjummel Boys’ achieving major commercial success, he claimed he did not receive any share of the profits. The complaint was initially taken up following directions from the Judicial First Class Magistrate Court in Ernakulam.
In response, the producers denied any wrongdoing, stating that Siraj had failed to make the investment on time, which allegedly disrupted the film’s production schedule. However, the High Court did not accept this as grounds to dismiss the case and allowed the police investigation to proceed.
Acclaimed film faces legal clouds
‘Manjummel Boys’, based on a real-life rescue incident in the Guna Caves, has been widely praised for its emotional storytelling, grounded execution, and standout editing. The film has received high critical acclaim and boasts strong repeat watch value, especially for its well-crafted rescue sequences.
