Devadas, of ‘Athisayan’ fame, makes a comeback as a grown-up star through ‘Kalikkoottukar’, which tells the story of six friends. The 144-minute movie has the multiple equations of their friendship at the centre of the narrative, looking at the crushes, jealousies, dreams and more, that lends spice to their campus life.
Anand (Devadas) is a popular student, with many admirers, though his family story is laced with tragedy.
Along with his friends, he goes on a trip and something unpleasant is all set to happen, if the interval moment is anything to go by.
Till the half time break, the film makes it amply clear that it aims to deal with the menace of drugs in our campuses, through all the fun and frolic. Devadas has good screen presence, though he is still a work in progress, like his supporting cast. Though it tries hard, the plot is thin, so far. There are quite a few toilet humour moments, which everyone might not be able to digest. The song that starts off the tale is badly choreographed, though peppy, just like the stunts. Certain moments of romance are a little cringeworthy too.
The film, like certain star-son movies that try to remind you of their 'starry’ surname, keeps trying to remind you of ‘Athisayan’ and ‘Anandabhairavi’, which is a little tasteless.
