Director Prajesh Sen, whose Jayasurya-Samyuktha Menon starrer Vellam, which received its U certification recently, said that the film deals with an important topic and is very different from his award-winning 2018 debut, Captain. Delving into the life of an alcoholic, Vellam is a story of a person that many of us are familiar with, says the writer-director.

“Vellam has a personal resonance for me, because the story is about a character - an alcoholic - whom we commonly encounter. They have a common trait that we explore through the film. We have used a thread of the real-life story of a man in Kannur, but this is also the narrative of several such persons from anywhere in the State,” says Prajesh.

However, while this is the story of an alcoholic, it is also a positive family story, he points out. “It is the people who are constantly taunted and told that they will not do anything with their lives that turn to alcohol, but when such a person arrives at a self-realisation about his addiction, he can turn his life around. That is the positive message that the film aims to convey. It is also meant to be inspirational,” he explains, adding that he hopes for a theatrical release in 2021.
So, how is Vellam different from Captain, a sports drama about former national football captain VP Sathyan? “This is more light and engaging family viewing. While Captain was about a person who had lost much in life, this is about a person who emerges a winner,” says the director, who has started work on his next project, titled The Secret of Women.
