On Sreenivasan’s wedding anniversary, director Mohanan, who is also his brother-in-law, shared a very emotional note on social media. He posted a loving picture of
Sreenivasan and his wife Vimala and reminded everyone by saying, “Today is that day.”
In his words, Mohanan wrote, “Today is that day, January 13. The day they began their journey together, without a photographer or videographer, without the light of a traditional lamp or the fragrance of sandalwood incense, using the money given by Mammootty and Innocent. All journeys are like this. Somewhere, at some point, one person suddenly leaves.”
The post made netizens emotional. One comment said, “Everyone saw the warmth of this relationship during Sreeniyettan’s final days. The care with which it was lived and carried forward… there is nothing more needed for a peaceful life ahead. Two people who lived as a true example.”
A quiet love that grew slowly
Sreenivasan and Vimala got married when he was struggling in Madras, running behind cinema dreams. Vimala was their neighbour. That small friendship slowly became love. Sreeni felt that Vimala liked him too, but he never had the courage to say it openly. There was a silent understanding between them.
At that time, Sreenivasan had no steady income and no clear future. He knew how hard life could be if Vimala came into his uncertain world. So he asked her to forget him and choose a better life.
But Vimala did not turn away. Even when her family pressured her, she refused to marry someone else. She saw Sreeni’s honesty and stayed firm.
A letter, a date, and a simple wedding
When Sreenivasan understood that Vimala’s heart would not change, he accepted that love. There were no phones at home then, not even a landline. So he wrote her a letter that said, “January 12 is our wedding day. Be ready.”
They had no money for wedding expenses. Innocent and Mammootty gave the money needed. Because of crowd at the registrar office, the wedding moved from January 12 to January 13. The marriage happened quietly at the Kathiroor registrar office.
The power of 13 and a full life
A friend once told Sreenivasan that 13 was unlucky. Sreeni laughed. Later, life proved otherwise. After Vimala entered his life, Sreenivasan rose high in Malayalam cinema. He became an actor, writer, director, producer, and a loved human being.
Once he told that same friend, “My new film 'Udayananu Tharam' is starting its shoot during Rahu Kalam. So 13 is not such a bad number after all!”
Sreenivasan left this world on December 20, 2025. The legend will live in the hearts of many through his memorable works.
