Iti Acharya is new in Malayalam but has already bagged a plum role in the upcoming film Kerala Today, for which the shoot is now over. The film revolves around the life of a woman and the ways with which she makes a career for herself. “I play an SI, a strong and feminine character. It is not a negative character per se, but her circumstances bring about changes in her.
She is on the way to becoming a police woman, but is faced with obstacles. She also has to support her family and thus her life takes a twist,” says Iti. However, she adds that neither the film nor her character is regular or conventional. “My character is no girl-next-door; she is in a cop’s uniform throughout the film. Maqbool Salmaan is the lead actor in the film, but is not the usual love interest. Everything in the film is offbeat,” she says.
The film is called Kerala Today because it touches on the challenges faced by women in Kerala. Iti, who is four films old in Kannada, was noticed by Malayalam filmmakers after she did a cameo in Vinay Govind’s Kili Poyi. One of her Kannada films, Kamakshi, is a multilingual, and will be released in Malayalam as well. “Kamakshi also revolves around woman character. I feel lucky to have bagged such women centric roles,” she signs off.
