If I direct a film, I want it to be politically correct in every way: Ramya Nambeesan
While, like most of us
Ramya, who also starred in the movie with Vijay Sethupathi, says, “Many have heard me singing a raw version of the track Konji Pesida and have been requesting me to make a video. I am happy that I could finally do it through my YouTube channel.”
However, she isn’t actively putting out content through the online channel. Ask her why and she says, “I know that frequent and timely uploads, and interactions are expected on these platforms but that’s tough for me. I make a video only when I am personally influenced by a song. I can’t pressure myself to do it just because it should be done.”
This was also her motivation to recently direct a short film titled Unhide, which discussed various kinds of assaults women face. “Our tendency to blame women for the assaults they face has been disturbing me for long. I felt that I could pass a few thoughts on the truth behind it to people, through my medium of art. After watching Unhide, many got in touch with me saying they could connect with the ideas it presented,” says the Anjaam Pathira actress.
Can we expect her to direct a movie in the future? “I definitely want to direct a film one day, and want it to be politically correct in every way. But yet again, there should be a project that inspires me,” she says.
Ramya was busy shooting in Chennai in March, and got home just before the lockdown was announced. Since then she has been spending time with her family in Tripunithura. “I have been watching movies on OTT platforms, listening to music, cooking and keeping myself updated on all news about Covid-19. I have also been into yoga, meditation and doing occasional workouts,” she says.
The release of her upcoming Tamil movie Plan Panni Pannanum, which has Badri Venkatesh, is delayed. She also has a day’s shoot pending on her film with Prabhudeva and has three more projects lined up, one of which is a Malayalam film.
Ask her if artistes are discussing the new normal for film sets and Ramya says, “Yes, but we can’t jump into anything. Avoiding the crowd of technicians and more on a film set can be tough and it’s something we have to carefully figure out.”
