The Women in Cinema Collective (WCC) has called for a thorough examination of the recently released Justice Hema Committee report, emphasizing the need to understand the deep-rooted misogyny within the film industry and to take corrective measures.

In a statement released via their social media handle, the organisation strongly condemned the recent wave of cyber-attacks and derogatory comments directed at senior women artistes, including a founding member of the WCC.

The recently released Hema Committee report observed that one member of the organisation, who is ‘getting several offers in cinema is the founder member of the WCC’ claimed that there was no sexual assault on women in the industry for ‘selfish motive’. This has prompted the cyber attack and the organisation has now stated that they will seek legal action if it continues.

“With the release of the Justice Hema Committee report, we hope it is examined with the seriousness and gravity it deserves, to understand the historical reasons for misogyny in this profession and steps are taken to address and correct it. The public support for survivors is much appreciated however, we strongly condemn the cyber attacks and belittling comments about senior women artistes including a founding member of WCC that undermine a woman’s professional journey and experience especially when they have stood in solidarity with survivors. WCC believes that every member has the right to speak about their individual experience without fear. Throughout our history, many women have carved their own space in this film industry through hard work and their talent and shone like beacons despite many challenges,” the organization said in their statement.

The organisation urged the industry and society at large to focus on the issues raised by the Justice Hema Committee report and other voices speaking up for change, “Let us instead use this opportunity to understand the issues at hand as raised by the Hema Committee report and others who are speaking up to move toward the change that is required for a clean and equal workplace in our industry.”

The Justice Hema Committee report made a shocking revelation about the harassment women endure in the Malayalam cinema industry. The report highlights a range of issues, from the casting couch and sexual harassment to gender inequality, pay disparity, and the absence of basic facilities for women in the industry.
