It is hard to find a Keralite who is not a fan of Superstar Suresh Gopi. His dialogues 'Just remember that' and 'Ormayundo Ee Mukham' still resonate in the ears of every movie lover in the state. No other actor in the industry has reached the benchmark of the police officer roles that Suresh Gopi has played. How can the movie buffs of Kerala ever forget the iconic dialogue, "Edo Mohan Thomasinte... I am Bharath Chandran. Just remember that," delieved by Suresh Gopi? The dialogue is from the 1994 release, Shaji Kailas directorial 'Commissioner'. Scripted by Renji Panicker, the movie saw Suresh Gopi essaying the dutiful police commissioner Bharath Chandran. The fierce and honest police officer Bharath Chandran and his efforts to stand for truth and bring down the corrupted politicians and smugglers received a huge applause in the theatres making the movie a corner stone in Suresh Gopi's career. The movie also emerged as a blockbuster hit at the box office and a sequel was made later.

Written by Renji Panicker and directed by Joshiy, 'Lelam' is yet another golden feather on the actor's hat. The 1997 release revolves around the story of a rivalry between two families, who own a liquor business. Suresh Gopi essayed Anakkattil Chackochi, who is a retired Captain from army. Son of Anakkattil Eapachan and a spoiled child, but good by heart, Suresh Gopi's character Chackochi was loved by the audience. The movie saw Suresh Gopi in a thug avatar and the action sequences helped in the evolution as a superstar.

The 1997 release 'Kaliyattam' might be one of those movies that proved Suresh Gopi as a finest actor. The movie showcased his enormous talent, making him not only a hit maker but also one of the finest talents in the industry. An adaptation of Shakespeare's 'Othello', the movie saw Suresh Gopi essaying Kannan Perumalayan, a performer. Kannan Perumalayan is a Theyyam artist and he is nothing but an adaptation of the character Othello itself. Kannan wearing the Chamayam (face art) for Theyyam and returning to his lady love Thamara, suspecting that she is cheating on him and later murdering her still remains a magnificent piece of creation. His stupendous performance during these scenes and the minute facial expressions is noteworthy for any acting student.

Suresh Gopi must be one of the most apt actors from Malayalam to play the role of a cop and Shaji Kailas, who directed the actor in 'Commissioner' knew it well. The 1999 movie 'FIR' also saw Suresh Gopi as a cop. He essayed Mohammed Sarkar, the Superintendent of Police, who often gets transferred to different places for being a truthful officer. Sarkar is appointed by the CM to investigate the murder of an influential merchant. And Suresh Gopi aced the character well and it is a must-watch.

Many might disagree with this movie and state that it might not be the top five movies of the actor, but ‘Varane Avashyamund’ is worth mentioning as the actor has given an enthralling performance post his break of five years on celluloid. Suresh Gopi essayed Major Unnikrishnan in the 2020 release and showcased impressive acting skills. From flaunting subtle expressions to his own lines from old movies to delivering the emotional speech towards the climax, ‘Varane Avashyamund’ is a must watch. Debutant Anoop Sathyan has directed the superstar in the movie.
