Father’s Day 2023: 5 Malayalam movie characters, who proved fatherhood is beyond giving birth

For every child, their father is their biggest hero. A superhero, who doesn’t always wear capes, but does everything that a superhero is supposed to. But, since the world is not always rainbows and butterflies, we also come across biological fathers, who cause harm to their own blood. And a handful of others, who despite not being fathers biologically, being guardians. Hence, fatherhood has to be an emotion, a state of mind.

On this Father’s Day, let’s celebrate some of the Malayalam movie characters, who showed us the true meaning of fatherhood, despite not being a biological father.

Chettachan from ‘Pavithram’

Unnikrishnan (played by Mohanlal) becomes Chettachan, an interesting amalgamation of a brother and father, to his little sister. In the absence of both parents, Unnikrishnan steps up as the Chettachan for his newborn sister Meenakshi. From devoting his entire life for the upbringing of Meenakshi to being with her every step of the way, Chettachan is a character, who radiates fatherhood. It’s beautiful and at times painful to see the character being heaped with responsibilities, even before he is able to comprehend it.

Benny from ‘Priyam’

Benny (played by the charming Kunchacko Boban) takes care of the three orphan kids of his sister. Though Benny is quite young, and doesn’t look like a conventional father, he is a doting parent. From hustling to make ends meet, to doing his every bit to manage the three kids, who are quite a handful. The beautiful rapport they share is evident, and needless to say, Benny makes fatherhood seem easy.

Sidharthan from ‘Kuberan’

Every father wants to give his kid the best life possible, but sadly, not all could afford it. So, what does he do? Give them a taste of all the bright and beautiful things in the world, atleast once in a while? Yes, Sidharthan (played by Dileep) from ‘Kuberan’ tries that, once in every month! Sidharthan, who does odd jobs for a living is a parent to the three kids from his village. Though he isn’t the biological father, he has devoted his entire life for their wellbeing. On the first day of every month, he takes them to a bungalow, where they live for an entire day as the rich live. Sidharthan pays a huge chunk of his hard earned money for the same, but it is definitely worth it, especially seeing the happiness on the face of the kids.

Veeramani Warrier fro ‘Chinthamani Kolacase’

The 2006 release ‘Chinthamani Kolacase’ gives us a clear instance of why fatherhood is beyond giving birth. The film gives a contrast of two father, one biological, who rapes his own daughter, and the second, a father by soul, who fights the toughest battle to get justice for his daughter. Veeramani (played by Thilakan) is not the biological father of Chinthamani (essayed by Bhavana), however, he is the epitome of fatherhood. In an unexpected turn of events, when his daughter gets murdered, he fights with all his might, though he has no energy left.

Vijaybhaskar from ‘No. 1 Snehatheeram Bangalore North’

Fathers are born when they meet their child for the first time. Vijaybhaskar (played by Mammootty) too became a father, the moment he was handed over his sister’s two children. Vijay’s sister and her husband pass away in an accident, leaving their two kids orphans. Vijay takes the kids as his own, and conceals the truth from them to avoid them the pain. The rapport Vijay has with the kids is enviable, and it won’t be an exaggeration to say that all of us would wish for a doting father like him.
