Empuraan producer Gokulam Gopalan has addressed the ongoing controversy surrounding the film, stating that he has asked director Prithviraj Sukumaran to consider making changes following claims that certain scenes have offended sections of the audience.
I have told director Prithviraj to make changesaSpeaking to Manorama Online, Gokulam Gopalan assured that the film was not intended to hurt anyone’s sentiments.
"If any scenes or dialogues in Empuraan have hurt anyone, I have told director Prithviraj to make changes," the producer said. He also confirmed that some words in the film have already been muted in response to protests. However, he pointed out that Empuraan had undergone proper censorship procedures before its release and did not face objections at the time.
The producer acknowledged that implementing further changes at this stage would be challenging and costly. "Making modifications in theatres will be expensive. With the film running in 4,000 cinemas, I estimate that at least Rs 40 lakh would be required for these changes," he added.
Meanwhile, reports indicate that the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) had only suggested minimal edits before approving the film. According to On Manorama, the CBFC recommended trimming a scene involving sexual violence by half and reducing another depicting physical violence against a woman to a brief flash. Additionally, the filmmakers complied with the board’s directive to remove, replace, or mute a scene involving an interpretation of the national flag. The total runtime of the film was reduced by just 10 seconds.
Meanwhile, even though the controversy has indirectly helped the film to boost its traction among the audiences, Prithviraj Sukumaran’s directorial is only getting mixed reviews from the audiences. With mediocre reviews, it’s doubtful whether the film will be able to mint impressive numbers as expected, from the box office.
