The early morning trips to the nearby places for flowers to decorate the beautiful Pookkalam, slipping into the new Onakkodi (new outfits), indulging in the elaborate Sadhya(feast) by noon, spending the afternoons on the special Oonjal (swings), witnessing the spectacular and energetic Vallamkali (Boat Race), passing time in the evening with chucklesome Onakkalikal (Onam games), the harvest festival Onam is woven into the very own existence of every Malayali.

Onam is an emotion and for Malayalam actress Durga Krishna, this Onam is indeed very special, as she will be celebrating it with the love of her life - husband Arjun Ravindran for the first time after their marriage.
In an exclusive conversation with ETimes, Durga Krishna spoke about her earliest memories of Onam and also divulged her plans about celebrating this Onam with her spouse.
Durga Krishna was at Thodupuzha on the sets of her upcoming film directed by Ratheesh, when we connected with her over the phone.
She was chirpy, full of enthusiasm, composed, and confident, much similar to the Janaki from her debut film ‘Vimaanam’.
Like any other Malayali, Onam is all about happiness, togetherness, and of course the multi-course vegetarian feast for Durga Krishna.
“Onam was very fun while growing up. My family is very particular that we all are present on occasions like Vishu and Onam. All of us would gather together at our tharavadu (ancestral home). From religiously following the tradition of making
Pookkalam on all the 10 days to meeting cousins and relatives, Onam was about togetherness,” Durga Krishna took a trip down the memory lane.
With years passing by Onam too has changed for her and the actress shares that she has been celebrating Onam mostly on the sets, ever since she ventured into the movie industry.
“The past few Onams, especially the ones after entering showbiz, were mostly celebrated on the sets. I missed celebrating Onam with my family. Last Onam too was on the sets. I was filming a Kannada movie in Bangalore. Never in a million years could I think of missing the Sadhya, so last year, my brother and family brought me an authentic Sadhya on the sets. I wasn’t able to adjust to the flavour palette of the Sadhya from Bangalore, but I was fortunate to have them. I do really miss making Pookkalam and all the fun I used to have with my cousins,” she shared.
This year’s Onam is very special for Durga Krishan as the actress tied the knot with Arjun Ravindran in April and this marks their first Onam together as a couple. “We were hoping to celebrate our first Onam together with pomp and grandeur. After marriage we shifted to our new home, so we wanted to make Pookkalam, I wanted to prepare Sadhya, we have some great plans. Unfortunately, I am on the sets of a movie, so we won’t be able to stick to the plan. But I cannot miss celebrating our Onam together, so he (Arjun) would be coming on the sets. We will be celebrating Onam together but on the sets!” Durga summed up, speaking about her 2021 Onam plans.
